bearing removal from adaptor power steering ford 800

I am in the process of rebuilding power steering gear box Ford 800 -Started out as a leak at the top of the steering column. Found the seal surface of the steering shaft was well pitted so decided to replace the shaft. All was going well until I got to removing the adapter. It would not slide off the steering shaft. I finally got the shaft out of the casing with the recirculating ball unit still attached removed all the balls and slid everything off the shaft that way

Now my problem is removing the needle bearing and seal from the adapter. To give you some idea of the situation, the needles in the bearing are rusted and will not move.I assume the bearing race is rusted to the adapter. Tried tapping to no avail (surprize!!) Can it be pressed all the way through?? That would mean pressing the bearing and seal at the same time. I can"t see any ridge beteen them but I can't be sure. Any advice is appreciated Thanks, Bill

If you can get at it to press it, and sure it will come out the way you are going to press it, then yes.

Other option is to cut a relief groove with a carbide burr and a Dremmel or air grinder. Just have to be surgically careful not to cut too deep. Once cut through it will easily pull out.

Another solution, instead of replacing the shaft, install a Microsleeve repair. If you can find one that fits the shaft, it will be a permanent fix.

You need to remove the rust before things will start to move. Try using electrolysis. Get a plastic bucket that will be able to hold the part that is rusted. Add water and Super Washing Soda to the water. Place a piece of steel in the bucket opposite the part that you wish to de-rust making sure that it does not make physical contact with the part being cleaned. Hook up a battery charger with the positive lead to the donor part and the negative to the part to be cleaned and let it sit in the solution for a few days. The rust will be removed and you should be able to free up the needle bearings.
