JD 4000 synchro-range clutch slipping BAD

Hey all,
Weve got a JD 4000 diesel with the syncro range trans. Unfortunately the boss man left it outside in the field all last fall, winter, and spring. We only use it occasionally for raking, and today we started it up and the clutch slips very bad. I can barely accelerate, and it wont even grab enough on level ground to reach the top of each gear. I can drop the clutch in 8th gear and it will stand still while engine rpm is unaffected. It sure acts like the clutch is toast, but I sure hope its an adjustment or a leaking issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Any grinding of the gears when you try to shift it in to gear from neutral? I was thinking maybe the splines on the input shaft might be rusted, but if the clutch plate is moving far enough for it to disengage, it should go the other way under pressure and engage alright.

Check the bell housing drain hole.

Even better than that, this one has a nice big inspection plate on the bottom, loosen two bolts and drop it and have a look up at the clutch.

If I do that in the next week or so here, what kinds of things should I be looking for? Is there supposed to be any fluid or anything?

It's a "dry" clutch, shouldn't be much oil or grease in the housing.

Post back when you've dropped the cover (HOPEFULLY it's still there), ad had a look up there with a bright flashlight.

And, for gosh sakes, resist any urge to reach up there or stick the light or anything else up there with the engine running!

ONE scenario that could cause the clutch to slip after sitting parked for a while is if the tube the throwout bearing slides on is rusty and restricting free movement of the throwout bearing.

Did you loose your free travel on the clutch pedal.. Should be one inch free travel. If tight, throw-
out bearing is pushing on the three clutch levers; could cause clutch to slip.. Just a thought..
