Hi All
I hope you guys are able to assist me in getting my '71 Ford 4000 3 cyl diesel running smoothly....
It all started with the core plug behind the CAV diesel pump leaking, and I thought that while I had the pump off the tractor anyway, I might as well do a reseal of the pump, as the tractor has a hard time starting while cold. (Injectors replaced earlier)
I took a photo of the timing marks, and didn't study it closer before I pulled the pump.
As I began opening the pump, it was soon evident that I was not the first person there, and that the one before me either didn't know what he was doing or i a real hurry....
Among other things, the cir clip in the middle of the pump was just thrown back in there, with no respect to previous placement, so I didn't have any edges to align anything after.
I replaced the seals and reassembled the pump, and when I got to putting the pump back on the tractor, I noticed that someone had added additional marks on the pump and timing housing, but in my photo I saw that these marks were around 3 degrees misaligned (Clockwise) I thought to myself that with the clown that worked on the pump previously, I would install the pump with these marks aligned, which is very close to factory 0. I have no idea if it the original pump.
After refitting, the tractor still puffs a lot of white smoke and takes 20-30 seconds on the starter before it fires, although it seems to run a little better now
Now, how do I ensure proper alignment of the pump timing?
