Transmission inspection plate/Thermostat

I am a first time tractor owner with a 1955 Ford 860. I drained the transmission fluid for changing. I also removed the transmission inspection plate which is located near the drain plug. There was about ? inch of crud on the top side of the plate. When cleaning it off I found a bent cotter pin which apparently had not been connected to anything. I also noticed a hole in the center of the plate which obviously had been clogged. My parts manual shows the plate (Part# 7518) and the cotter pin (Part# 72038-S) in Section 7 page 9. I can?t determine from the diagram where the cotter pin belongs and I?m also wondering what purpose the center hole in the plate serves, or if they're related.

Secondly, when I bought the tractor I replaced the coolant, radiator hoses and thermostat. I used a 160 degree thermostat that I purchased at an auto parts store. I?ve noticed that the thermostat doesn?t open until the temp gauge reads 220 degrees. Upon opening the temp drops to 170 or so and remains there. Should this be of concern? My manual states the thermostat should begin opening at 158-162 degrees and be fully open at 178-182 degrees. If my thermostat is the issue does anyone have the brand/part number of the correct one? Any info will be appreciated. Thanks.

The cotter pin fits loosely in the hole in the inspection cover.

The purpose is to keep the hole open so any oil that leaks inside the bell housing will drip out.

As for the thermostat, you can order one on this site, or as long as the one from the auto supply fits properly, it will work.

I would run a 180. Look at the new one carefully. It should have a small hole or a v notch in the valve disc. That lets a small amount if coolant bypass until it begins to open. That keeps steam from building and holding coolant away from the bulb. It will give a more stable temp. If no hole you can drill one, say about a 1/16?.

Two comments...

1. You removed the CLUTCH inspection cover. It is FORWARD of the transmission.

2. Your description of how the thermostat is operating is consistent with it being installed backwards. The heat-sensitive copper bulb AKA the "heat motor" should face/enter the front of the cylinder head.
