Alternator wiring help

Hope I have the right forum, my alternator went out on my Jubilee and I have an extra alternator I 'd like to try and use it rather than getting another one but I can't find any information on how to wire it on the internet. The brand is a Ultima 01-0174, so any info on wiring would be helpful. I posted a picture of the back of it. The electrical posts/terminals have no labels. Thanks, Ron

Your alternator is a re-man Motorola/Prestolite, and it needs an external voltage regulator to function.

NOT hard to do, but (sadly) the aftermarket regulators that make this a "plug and plug" deal cost almost as much as a complete re-man Delco 10SI with a built-in regulator.

Best price I found was ebay #291714397949 @ $33. Most are a LOT more expensive.

Also, if you are interested, I can post how to use a regulator from a Delco INTERNALLY-regulated alternator to control your Motorola. $6.99 and up on ebay (263665565048), you'd also need a small aluminum plate or heat sink to mount the regulator on.

Thanks Bob for the information. Guess maybe I'll just try to get another alternator off ebay. I wondered if (as I've read else where) if the output for this ultima could be regulated by a 12 volt bulb or is that for something else?

Just to be clear "Ultima" didn't MAKE the alternator, that is a trademark for re-man units sold by O'Reilly's and possibly other auto parts stores.

It can't be controlled in a useful manner for use on a tractor with a "light bulb" as the output needs to vary with the load put on it.

You may be thinking of the small 12 volt bulbs such as #194 that are often used on the #1 pin of a Delco 10SI 3 wire alternator to excite it to start charging.

It's purpose is to turn on the regulator, not to be the regulator

Diodes and resistors can be used for the same purpose

A simple Delco 3 wire alternator like what was on a 1980 Chevy pickup no A/C no power any thing will cost you around $50 from O'Reilly's but the 1 wire from O'Reilly's is around $90. The 3 wires will start charging at lower RPM and also less likely to cause a battery drain from sitting for say a month of more with out running
