If you have the hood and gas tank removed and set safely away from the tractor AND have access to an oxy-accetylene torch, heat the remains of the adapter red hot, allow to completely cool, then repeat several times the remains should easily screw out when cool.

ok got the adapter removed, rolled the treads somewhat BUT not stripped out. Enough that I need to tap/retread the threads; can this be done with the head still on the engine block?

By now you probably have already done it, but I would have at least used a ship vac to suck out the debris from the re-thread as well as oil the tap to catch as much as possible.
