I needed to cut a pto shaft in order to fit an old implement I repaired to a tractor. Measured distance and figured how much I needed to cut off of round outer tube of pto shaft and then was going to cut the same amount off of solid square shaft attached to tractor end yoke. When I cut the round shaft, which was easier than I figured it would be-discovered that it was beyond the solid part of the outer tubing. Noticed that this solid end was welded to hollow round shaft. Now I'm not sure what to do-have an idea. How does this work? Do I need to bring solid piece to machine shop to be cut back then inserted and rewelded to round outer pto shaft??? Something I can do myself? Did search and could not find answers. Thanks in advance for guidance and help-

Whether or not to take it to a machine shop depends on your facilities and skills. If you have any doubts, have a machine shop do it. They should be able to cut and weld it much truer than most can do at home. It can be real bad if it breaks in operation. People have been seriously injured, or killed, by flopping pto shafts, not even considering equipment damage. Just my two cents for what it is worth.

To fix what you have, you or someone with a lathe will have to cut the tube off at the weld, make sure it s the right size to slip into the other piece of tubing on the side you re reattaching. You ll also need to make certain the tubing is cut of square.

Now comes the important part. Is the mating part square or rectangle? The yokes closest to each other need to be lined up or in the same plane, this is known as timing the u-joints and is very important. Once your all lined up all there is to do is weld the tube back on the adapter. On a 540 shaft balance is not really necessary as long as it runs fairly true.

With the price of some replacement shafts these days it doesn t even pay to fix yours, get a new one and cut it to length, done.
