Bad splines : How much time do I have left, Doc?

Had to deliver bad news to one of my patients today.
I said it is terminal and at best you have 100,000 seconds left.

:roll: ruffly 27 hours but nothing is certain at this point

I've seen them stripped before I've seen them bad but never one like this the splines are curled over.
And believe it or not the yoke looks fine, I need to clean it up some to inspect a bit better but I was pleasantly surprised.

Some Permatex bearing sealer should fix it for 5 years or so.

Likely, the lost metal is from "fretting".

Keeping the splines well greased will help with that.

Thanks and I agree a good greasing dose wonders but I just got this "Box O Bolts"
Good word "fretting". If ya don't mind I'll use that one.

Yeah the yoke is not looking as good as it did at first glance ... those look like those splines have had a revolution er two also.

Thanks for the definition very helpful.
I grabbed my glasses and cleaned the end of the yoke and found the splines a little better shape but no grease zerk, maybe it is on the sleeve if it has one of them. I haven't seen it in the box yet.

Those intenrnal splines don?t look that bad maybe
you could drill and tap it for a zerk

My thought exactly: the U-joint behind the yoke has a tiny-tiny (couple 1/1000) bit of slop and the other U-joint is too stiff -easy fixes. When I change out the U-joints I'll be able to drill out the end plate for a zerk.
