68 case shuttle shift problem

have a68 case 580 shuttle transmission. I was driving one day and the pedal went straight to the floor and I had to move the lever on the steering column into neutral to stop. The pedal remains in the floor but can be moved freely by hand and if you try to move the shifter into forward or reverse on the steering column it just grinds. Any suggestions on the problem or solution. This tractor is like part of the family and I need it fixed for my business. It's kinda embarrassing pulling myself around with the backhoe when all these other plumbers have new equipment. Thanks for your time!!! Tom

Either the knob on the end of your clutch rod pulled out of the clutch release lever or the clutch release
lever broke. Split the tractor at bellhousing and problem will be quite evident.------Loren
