I have a John Deere 214 that when I shift into 1,2 or 3rd gear it stalls out. I have 4th gear and Reverse. I removed the variator , cleaned it up, it now moves freely. All the belts move until I release the clutch in the above gears. Any help would be appreciated

Something is jammed or broken inside the transmission area of the transaxle.

You can view or download the service manual at: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwiPk6-us7fiAhUFXq0KHSyKB1cQFjAAegQIARAC&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.wfmfiles.com%2Fdownload%2Fmanuals%2FSM2105%2520(Oct-76).pdf&usg=AOvVaw0pUCV_9Hbo2GF9eJG-Rfkb

I believe what the other poster is calling "primary spring" may be the spring attached attached to the variator, which you say you've freed up and is working properly.

Should I tighten the spring more?

Time to order all new bearings, Bushings and seals for the transmission. Plus replace what ever is busted on the shift fork.
