Cleaning Out Block

Need some advice on how to clean out the
engine block on my F20. I have the engine
completely apart, and I have the sleeves
out. There was a significant amount of rust
around the sleeves that I loosened and
cleaned out. Some of the rust and scale
fell down below into the lower portion of
the block, so I just need some advice on
how to clean this out. Thanks.

Are you doing an inframe?

If so, about all you can do is scrape and shop vac the majority, wash it down best you can. Concentrate on the sealing area at the bottom of the liners. Clean it with Scotchbrite or Emmory cloth. Be careful not to get anything in the crank journal oil holes. Some duct tape before starting will help.

If the block is out, a pressure washer will get most of it, scrape and sand the sealing surface.

If everything is out of it, crank, cam, oil pump, etc., best thing to do is pressure wash. Then spray solvant or something as such on interior crank case surfaces to prevent rust from forming after contact with water. Main thing here is to not get any rust, dirt, carbon in any oil ports. Is what I do is just blow through the oil ports with the pressure washer right at the end of pressure washing. Then come back with an air hose and blow the water out of the oil ports with air.

While cleaning up the block of my current project I removed the timing chain tensioner. In the gallery behind it I found a 1 mm piece of wax. The metering hole that the oil has to pass through in order to lube the tensioner is only .5 mm. The block went to the machine shop for thorough cleaning including oil galleries.
