Maybe a bad bearing forward on the shaft?
How do I replace?

I can't tell you the first thing about that as I am a Ford guy, but as a general thing seals go out because of too much play in a bearing, and since the bearing quill wants to loosen, some play in the shaft is possibly causing the quill to loosen, and the play in the shaft could be allowed by a bad bearing at the other end. I would consult the JD parts pages to see where the other end of the shaft is supported. I would also post this on the JD forum down below and you would likely get more response.
