steering wheel coating or paint??

Just finished gluing and filling broken and cracked bakelite on a steering wheel. Sanding everything smooth came out nice but left the surface dull. Is there anything I can spray on to give it a little sheen and keep it from rubbing off on my hands? Some clear coat maybe?

I don't know of anything that will hold up to normal wear and exposure to sun.

If it's more for show, I would rattlecan it gloss black, be ready to shine it up with another coat when needed.

The other possibility might be epoxy paint, but I had a really bad experience with it trying to brush it on. Spray would be better, but pretty much going to ruin the spray gun. Your results may vary...

I done the steering wheel on my M that way about 10 years ago. After filling all the cracks with epoxy I top coated it with black lacquer. It still looks great after all these years. I've also used the rustoleum plastic fusion paint on a couple other tractors and it's held up well also.

I've never had any luck getting a paint to adhere to bakelite for any length of time. The only thing that works for me is to polish it out. I sand it through 2000 grit, buff it and then use a little Bumper Majic on it.

I painted one probably 6-8 years ago after consulting here. It still looks good but it is not a worker.

I did that to a tractor wheel, then think I primed it with black primer and then sprayed it with black bumper paint, the stuff you use on the rub strips on a bumper. However I don't think this tractor has been outside an hour in the last ten years so who knows how long it lasts.
