MF 283 Runs for 20-30 minutes then dies...

My MF 283 starts right up, runs for 20-30 minutes under load, then chokes down and dies. It begins to lose power and sometimes a popping sound is heard, then dies. Sometimes it powers down a bit, regains power, then eventually chokes down. Increasing the throttle does nothing. Generally it will start back up but dies shortly therafter. Sometimes I must manually pump the fuel pump numerous times before it will start again. It always dies soon after. Where do I start?

Look on top of the filter and see if there's a small line on it, if so remove the line from the fitting and see if the small orifice in the fitting is plugged. It MUST be open, it's job is to remove any trapped air from the filter base before it can get into the injection pump, stalling the engine. Hole is small, about .020 inch and when it gets plugged it will drive you NUTS! There can also be trouble with the supply pump itself if a check valve is bad, or the engine operating lever is loose/worn preventing it from working right inside, but can work fine with the hand lever. All this is assuming filter is OK, AND installed correctly. If NAPA/WIX is used MAKE SURE there's no extra O ring in the filter top outer groove, that's the fuel inlet and must remain open..

Thanks for the input. I'm pretty sure I have a NAPA filter. Makes sense... I Will check those items as soon as it quits raining!

I ran my tractor today for over an hour on uneven ground pushing brush and shredding. She ran strong like bull!!

I believe the culprit was the extra gasket on the fuel filter. I took it off, bled the air out of the lines, and haven't had an issue.

Many thanks for the help and for sharing your knowledge. You saved me many $$'s and lots of time.
