Pistons and Sleeves

I have a diesel farmall 560. I have a mechanic who will do a basic overhaul for me. He wants to replace the pistons and not the sleeves. Sleeves look
great and still fall within spec. I have never heard of replacing one and not the other, but he is the most reputable tractor mechanic we have around
and is the highest recommended. Any thoughts here? I'm by no means an expert in this at all. Thanks

hcollector804 ,While your sleeves are with in specs, yhey are worn some and are tapered.I would replace them while it id torn down that far,not much more to replace them. Why have problems down the road like leaking )ring,or excessive ring land ware because of cylinder taper.I would replace them and you will have a complete rebuild.

If they are within spec they have no significant taper. How many hours per year against years you want to run it? Doing way more work than needed is good from a hobby standpoint but not from a business view.

. Make sure that the local mechanic does not sink the valve seats and shorten the valves . The drop in compression will cause hard starting .

The original 560, and early D282 used wide flange slip fit sleeves and are easily replaced. The LATE D282 blocks use thin flange HEAVY PRESS fit sleeves, and if that's what the engine has and mechanic knows it, those are a real BEAR to replace. My 560D has a late block because an IH short block was installed in the 1980s. For BEST results, sleeves, pistons, and rings should ALL be replaced..
