Oil pan bolt torque

I'm replacing the oil pan gasket on my 1957 JD 420W. I have purchased every manual , parts numbers, service manuals and have the original owners
manual. I'm searching for information on the oil pan bolt torque. Thank you for your consideration,Ron

Oil pan bolts, and other miscellaneous hardware, were not considered "critical" like heads, rods, etc., so specific torque specs often were not given by manufacturers, not just JD. At best a manual may have had a chart of fastener sizes and grades with torque for that type hardware. These charts are commonly found in newer manuals. Lacking a specific torque for oil pan bolts in a manual, I would use a generic chart for the size, grade, and pitch bolt used. Oil pan and valve cover hardware often gets tightened too tight, distorting the metal leading to leaks. JMHO

If no "specs" are given for the stamped-steel oilpan I'm tightening (usually 1/4" or 5/16" capscrews) I typically use a "nutdriver" and snug 'em up by feel.

Better that ralphing on them with a ratchet or breaker bar, and they can always be snugged up a little more later.

That being said, some torque "specs" I have seen for oilpan screws range from basic 4 to 7 foot pounds for 1/4" screws, up to 15 foot pounds or so for 5/16" screw.

(I multiply torque value X 12 and use a 1/4" drive inch-pound torque wrench.)

I usually use a 3/8 ratchet and put my hand around the head of the ratchet and turn until tight not using the handle of the ratchet at all. Has worked well for me a few decades
