JD 4010 PTO

New to me a 61 4010. Diesel PTO is free to turn either from back or front. but doesn't want to turn with the Lever on the left side of stearing wheel. I got the operation Manuel off line but there is really nothing that addresses trouble shooting the pto.

First tractor at age 56 so am ready for a short life with lots of learning. I have looked through posts but never came across one that would help me diagnose if this is major or minor. Did find a youtube post where somone was working on a 4020 with a similar problem, it turned out to be a broken shaft pin. I dont have any PTO needs currently but would like to have things working if I can do so at a reasonable price. The tractor starts shifts into all gears, stops and the 3 point lifts and lowers using the lever on the right of seat. The rock arm lever (s) seem to have no direct effect on anything.

Thanks for any directions

There's a small pin inside that breaks if the PTO is put in a bind or the bolts holding the stub shaft come loose or are tighten incorrectly. It requires splitting the tractor between the clutch and transmission. Pretty sure it is only on the 3010 and 4010 tractors.

Yes. About 8 hours of labor to replace a $1.00 shear pin.

There are two of those pins in the pto gear-train. Other parts inside the pto shaft itself which 'shift' the gears between 540 and 1000rpm when you swap pto stub shafts.

The most common cause of failure for the 10 series pto is letting the stub shaft bolts get loose which causes the mentioned pins to get mangled or sheared-off

While it's certainly possible that the infamous pin (Key #32 in the diagram) or the long pin that pushes on it (Key #34) in the 4010 PTO 540/1000 shift has failed, there are other things that can cause the PTO not to operate.

First, I'd have a look at the PTO "stub shaft" held on by 4 bolts. Are the bolts tight? If so, remove them, and check to see if any dirt or debris is trapped between the mounting surfaces.

Using a punch or other tool, press on the pin in the center of the tractor flange.

Is it spring-loaded, when you push it forward does it return rearward (as it should)? It is this movement that moves a shift collar towards the middle of the tractor and selects the 540 gear or the 1000 gear. (The 540 and 1000 stub shafts are different at the flange face, one pushes the pin forward, the other does not.)

Other things that could cascade the PTO not to engage...

When you move the PTO engagement lever forward, does it "snap" into the engaged position? If NOT adjustment may be needed, or something is wrong with the linkage, or the clutch, itself.

The PTO clutch is piggybacked on the engine flywheel with the foot clutch. There are a number of things that can go wrong there, including a failed throwout bearing, which can also destroy the pressure plate engagement fingers.

The lined plate can fail, including the hub tearing loose, or the splines shearing.

Take the inspect cover off under the clutch housing on note what (if anything) is laying on top of the cover.

Look up inside with a brite little light and check out the throwout bearing and the 3 PTO engagement fingers.

OBVIOUSLY, don't be mucking around in there with the engine running!)

Thanks I'll try the non invasive stuff first and report back. And Yes I will make sure the engine is off before I go pocking any of my remaining fingers in it.

Please search thru archives on 4010 pto shear pin, or something like that. I posted an explanation that my 4010 pto shear pin broke and how I replaced it without splitting the tractor with photos. It was a $3 fix for me. I did drill holes thru the cap screws and lace them together with wire afterwards.

Thanks for finding the post. Cool thing about this whole story is when the pin sheared, I was told at a dealer splitting the tractor had to happen. I went home, and started looking the tractor over thinking there must be a trick. Behold, I saw that pipe plug and figured someone knew the trick and I was lucky enough to own it. I have to say it would take some courage to drill and tap the transmission case.
