PTO clutch

I have a Ford 7000 with single speed pto and load monitor. I have pulled the IPTO clutch and it is a 3 disc clutch pack.
I c that they make 4 and 5 disc clutch packs. Can I use a 4 disc clutch pack? And does anybody know why they made clutch packs with additional friction plates (discs)? Thanks.

The more discs the greater the friction area,= more holding power to keep from slipping.As far as just adding more disks I'm not sure if it can be done with your existing housing,without replacing it.

I see. I was going to buy the whole clutch pack anyway (comes with the housing). I just wanted to put the heavy duty clutch pack in. If they weren't $250 each I would order one of each and compare the housings to c if they fit.
