Hi everyone,
I have a Ford 7740 SLE Powerstar and the problem i have is the shuttle lever not working right.
The reverse gear sometimes doesnot engage very well, crunching when u release the clutch.
Is anyone able to inform me of the adjustment needed and how to go about it.

There are linkages that are adjustable, but they are different depending on which transmission you have and there are maybe four different ones. The adjustable linkages are vertical rods. I never adjusted mine but from the parts pages the adjustment is at the top just under the plastic cover.

Thanks for that. I have a 16 speed trans.

It's been quite a while since I last worked on one, but I'll add in a bit. To add to showcrop's information, some of the Fords of that era also used cables from the console to the top of the transmission for the shifters. I can't remember if they can be adjusted underneath the console or not, but I do recall adjusting a few at the transmission cover, underneath the floor of the cab. It's pretty easy to get at, just pull the floor mat, and should be 10 or 12 bolts holding the floor plate in place. I can't help with the actual adjustments though, it's been too long and I don't have the manuals at hand to look at.

Thanks for the info, it gives me a bit of a direction to sort this out. Will have a look at that and see if i can nut it out.
Cheers Rick

CheIIers Rick
I too have a 7740 with the same problem.Works fine in forward but grinds when shifting into reverse and also pops out of reverse.I believe the problem is a worn reverse synchronizer, which requires transmission disassembly. Not a cheap fix.

I have been adviced here remove floor mat (no tools needed), remove the 10 10mm hex bolts retaining floor plate and you will find 2 cables.
The one on left is the 4-5 gears, the right one is the shuttle cable.
Seems the problem with the shuttle was on the cables. The bolts that hold the collar in place were a bit loose but not too much. Retightened them and became better but still had difficulty on shifting reverse. Found that only crunched when you try to engage reverse and the lever is not at its full travel and you release clutch.
If you have problems engaging reverse you will have to adjust the lever to stay a bit more forward and allow it to give more reverse travel. Loose the collar retaining bolts, loose the collar locknut.
If you need to make more reverse travel on the lever u will have to rotate the collar in the direction that aproaches the locking nut you have just loosened. If you need forward travel (Forward on the shuttle giving trouble) you will have to rotate on the opposite direction.
I passed from difficult reverse to no forward in a little more tham 1 turn, its a narrow adjustment.
Try in steps of 1/6 of turn until works good on both directions.

As older it gets the adjustment will become narrower as you will have wear on the pins that hold the cable on place.
Did this on mine to find that one bolt was loose and the other was missing, found it sitting on top of wiring loom. After a bit of fiddly adjustment shuttle is working correctly in both fwd and rev with no crunching.
Give it a go it might be your problem.
Good luck, Rick.
