New Idea for power steering using longer steering arm.

I have an idea for a simple power steering addition. Use the power of leverage not hydraulics.

Replace the existing arm from the front tractor wheels with a longer one. Like using a cheater bar on a wrench to help loosen a nut. The angle of the long arm would have to be change a little
The long tie rod that attaches to it would have to be shortened a little to compensate for the longer arm.

It would not take much of an arm length to act as a lever and help make steering easer.

What do you think??????

keep in mind if you do something to up the mechanical advantage, you will have a trade off in decreased arc of travel, depending on how you build it. does the steering mechanism have enough travel to still give you sufficient steering right and left?

the longer the arm on the pivot, the more travel the pushing arm needs to move the wheel the same degree of travel... ie.. the longer the lever is, the easier it is to move, but the less it moves past the fulcrum.

You can do the same thing by putting a larger diameter steering wheel on it... And that won't have an adverse effect on any of the designed linkages...

Your RIGHT never thought of that. So what tractor has a bigger wheel which will fit my Ford tractor?????

SUPER Idea

I have a kubota tractor that was made with the longer arm. If you turn the wheel the front tires are almost sideways. When the tire drops in a hole while driving the wheels turn too far and the stress breaks the king pins. I"ve been thinking of shortening mine.

WOW the designers of the Ford 850 are smarter then we think and understood what would happen with longer arms for steering.

So with all your good advice, I am looking for a larger steering wheel to add more leverage for steering.

Thanks for all the ideas to help.

All you have to do is ask and help will come if you listen and are welling to recieve.

Lots of good people to help in this world, I always keep that in mind.

it's obvious from your latest post that you need to give some attention to the box instead of build more extra devices to give it more MA.. when it's not needed. the ford manual box performs fine, if maintained once every 50 years....
