Finishing & Painting Methodology

How does everybody "finish" their restos? Seen MANY nicely done ones and always wondered how people go about getting the show quality finish job. Not so much in what you used, but how did you go about it.

-Reassemble, Prime & Paint?
-Prime & Paint each part, assemble & touch up bolts?
-Other Magical Ways?

prepping the surface, using quality materials are the most important part. you have to pull it apart, plan ahead, sand until you are sick of sanding, prep and sand some more. have had most luck with painting separate and using competent helper for reassembly---this avoids unintentional overspray etc....

I think that it works well to leave many parts that get in the way of spraying off, and hang and spray them while spraying main chassis. Fasteners can be done the same way, bolts and screws can be pushed into cuts in a cardboard box. Then assemble and do necessary touch up by hand.

I'm a retired auto body and paint guy. When we had parts that had to be bolted on, or panels that attached to another panel, we'd paint the areas where the bolts or parts went on, then assemble the parts, lightly scuff the over spray if dry, clean it all, then paint the whole area.
If we didn't put hardener in those light coats, then we could wash off any paint showing, and then paint the whole machine.
