Question about starter/ignition

Sometimes my starter keeps running after the engine has started. I have confirmed that electrical connections are tight, good battery ground. I ordered a new ignition switch, which should be here in a few days, but if it isn't the ignition switch, then my next guess would be that the thing on the starter that moves over to mesh with the teeth on the flywheel isn't retracting when it is supposed to.

Are these the two most likely things? And, if it is the starter retractor thing, is there a way to test it?

I don't know if this makes any difference, but this was a positive ground that was converted sometime in the past to a negative ground.

You can pull the starter out and hook the set of jumpers to the battery, clamp the ground lead on the starter frame and touch the starter lug with the Positive lead and the starter will activate. It it fails to retract after you remove the positive lead, you"ve found your problem. Usually oil and dirt can cause the problem but there may also be a spring that has failed in the drive. Been a long time since a messe with starter drives.

Changing the ground doesn"t make any difference.

You probably need a new Bendix drive. You also need to make sure there's no starting voltage going to the starter once you quit twisting the key or pushing a starter button. Is there a starter solenoid used with your starter? If there is it could be the problem. Hal

I agree with your own diagnosis and Hal, if it has an inertia spring starter drive (Bendix) its probably worn n dirty n sticking engaged. Sometime a good clean up and light lube with lithium grease will fix that. Also insure the starter is bolted in tight cuz if its out of alignment that can cause sticking and hanging in.

I just remembered that, before I brought the tractor into the shop, months ago, I pressure washed it. After I got it all clean, I could see that the plug was missing from the hole to access the timing marks on the flywheel. The first time I started it, a bunch of water came shooting out.

I had forgotten about that, but now it's probably come back to haunt me...rust wise, that is.

I'll take the starter off and have a look.

It is the bendix drive.

All that's left after this is replacing front wheel bearings. Painting will have to wait until next year (if ever).
