Ford 2000 Brake drum removal question

Ok, still trying to remove a brake drum on a Ford 2000. So far, no success.

Question: To back off the beake pads is it the adjustment under the dust cover that is accessed by removing the small plastic cover? OR Is it the two screws with the jam nut on the back of the dust cover?

Been soaking with BP Blaster and using a gear puller for several days - all to no avail.

Tanks for the help!

the adjuster should be behind a plastic cover at the bottom of the dust shield. not sure about the two screws and jam nut, that may be the wheel cylinder and bleeder. if the drum is stuck on and will not move at all, take a heavy hammer, 3lb and beat around on the drum, outer edge nearest you and also around the axle flange. that will pop the rust loose. they can be a devil to get off.

OK willl try again. Have backed the adjuster all the way down. Have been beating it for several days with a 3lb. and an 8lb! Very frustrating. Also soaked in PB.

Thanks for the help!

They can be a real pain, can't they?

They get stuck in 2 ways. The pads wear a groove and that holds the drum, but when you pull, it moves but springs back (and i swear it laughs too!). The other is from rust. The drum rusts to the center hole and to the lug holes. There is no "give" in that case.

I'm going to assume that you are in the rusted on case. When the frustration level gets high, I get out the O/A torch and heat up the drum around the lugs and about 1/2" to 1" from the edge of the center hole. Usually, they start to give after just heating around the lugs. I try to do that first and only as I don't want to cause an axle seal leak.

Just try to not get too frustrated and cause more damage than you solve.

Hi John,

Thanks for the information and help. You were correct on several fronts.

Finally used a O/A torch and a larger gear puller. It was rust, thank the Lord, it finally came off.

Now the bad news.... 1) The drum and shoes both looked brand new. No feelable wear groove on the drum and no noticeable wear on shoes. But was wet with oil. Sigh. 2) Noticed a small crack in drum from all the beating I assume.

Now, I ordered an aftermarket drum for $65. Will get some shoes from the NH dealer next week.

Questions: Is the aftermaket drum OK to use or do I need to cancel that and go with the OEM drum for $100+?

Lastly, the seal. Is the axle seal a big deal to change? (I assume this is the root cause of the problem.) I'm a helicopter mechanic, so tractors are not exactly something I'm famalier with.

Thanks again for the help!
