Hard starting for inital startup

I have a 1960 JD 440 ID when you first go out to start it , it will not start w out shot of ether. Once started then it will start n stop fine . Thought it was leaky fuel line changed all and still does it. seem like its loosing prime

Your probably right. Especially after sitting. See if a full tank helps. All my carbureted vehicles now have electric fuel pump. Diesels too for that matter.

How many hours are on the engine? When a diesel engine wears out the compression drops and they get harder and harder to start. Check the compression. Check the injector break pressure and the spray pattern.

Detroits were never great cold-starters even when all was good. But, first thing to check is the rack adjustment on any 2-53 in a Deere. It can make a night-and-day difference in starting if the rocker-arms are way out of adjustment. Throws the valve timing, injection timing, and fuel delivery out of wack.
