Hey all, new to the antique tractor pulling world. I have a 1942 Slant dash A I am looking into turning into a hobby puller for me, my father and someday my son to play around with. .090 over M&W aluminum pistons, getting ready to do some head work as well. I had the machine shop take a little fat off the head as well (conservatively). Is there anything else a guy can do to to add some power? Longer or lengthened rods? Not looking to throw down the dough on a stroker crank as Antique pulling isnt super prominent here in southeast Nebraska. Just want a nice running fun tractor.... just dont want to be last in the pack everytime. Thanks a ton!

Get a good cam grind will go along ways. We have add on fuel bowls that guys like pretty well. They run 2 extra needle and seats and floats to the carb so you don't run out of fuel at the end of the pull. Also a fuel pump will help. For some added cheap hp, add some pucks to the top of the pistons to increase the compression. Increase compression, run better grade of fuel . We burn 120 in all of ours. Head should be properly ported by someone that knows what they are doing. We are a full line JD pulling machine shop if you need anything done to it.

MSD is right on. About compression. A old guy once told me a na. engine will just push down 4 times as hard as it goes up. Even if this isn't quite right you get the idea. The cam is almost the first part JD put in their engines. So you will have the crank out. 8 really turns a A on.

No need to remove the crank to change out a cam. It is tight but can be done. I have done it many times with the crank still in.

(quoted from post at 07:02:55 09/16/22) Lose weight, in reality he who spends the most wins.

Not necessarily in a 3 or 3.5mph class, but less weight so you can balance your tractor or get to a lower class is a good plan.

High lift rockers are an easy add on that help too.

And go to several pulls. Some tracks I just never do any good, the next place I've got 1st three years straight! Remember its for fun either way.
