Oliver 88 diesel

I have been doing a lot of research on the
88 diesel motor I have one I bought at an
auction cheap with 2 heads tractor will be
strictly for pulling I am looking to run
it yet on diesel with a roosa master pump
and rebuilding a set of injectors with new
nozzles and resetting the opening
pressures to spec. My question is would I
be able to run 4020 lp pistons that have
the same wrist pin dementions and getting
away with cutting roughly .350 off the
piston tops to make it to the correct pin
height? Or would I be better off making
the motor a 283 over the 341ci? Anyone
ever build one before and have any input
really want to stick to a diesel since
tractor originally was a diesel. Thanks in

Remember opinions are like bellybuttons. My friend has a Diesel Oliver puller. He is competitive in the top-Cut 4 mph classes from 4000 to 5000. He has a direct injection 310 that came with a turbo. Of course the turbo is off. But that diesel pump is big enough. That is what it takes. They put them in jen sets beside tractors. Don't spend money on indirect injection motor.
 
What is your budget? $2,000? $10,000? What size tires you running? This will dictate how far you can go. Does a 4020LP have a flat top or dished piston? You will need flat tops to work with the factory crossfire injectors. Is a 4020 4.25 bore? Can an 88 sleeve be bored that big? Hardblock necessary? What weight classes will you be in? 1959-older only? Do your classes allow repowers? As Vic said a 310D out of a 1750 would be a better option if repowers are allowed. If you go this route a 1750/early 1855 diesel does not use an oil cooler. The later 1855/1950T/1955 310s use an oil cooler and may not fit an 88 frame. If you need to stick with the original style crossfire injectors heres my suggestion: If you are on a tight budget start with 3-7/8 flat top pistons, roosa master fuel system, and see how competitive you are. If you want to spend more the next step would be a stroker crank. Answering these questions will help me give you better advice. I've pulled an 88 diesel with a stock appearing engine for years and am very competitive. I like your willingness to be different.

Honestly budget is hard to say I get parts cheap with my work discount and am a mechanic at an agco dealer found the lp pistons are flat tops and cheaper than I can get the 3 and 7/8ths pistons for looking at 150 dollars cheaper a set. It definitely has to be stock appearing where I am located and there are lots of people around that know Oliver's really well and can easily pick out a 310 or 320 engine in an 88 or 77. there is a few that run around here but they get the dirty glares from everyone when they win and everyone is always quick to pull the cheating card when they do it too. Some of the pulls do have pay outs for the classes and if it means having a little money to help with fuel im all for it.
 
Also trying to stick with a 16.9 38 or 15.5 38 tire size max allowance is 20.8 with any rim you want all classes. Anything under a 20.8 is legal
