Pulling tire size

Well, I tried posting a message yesterday evidently didn't work. I have a 1950 John Deere G it has 13.6 x 38 tires (Firestone) on it now. I pull in the 6,000 & 7,ooo classes and do ok. The tractors (different brands) that do consistently better seem to always have bigger tires i.e. 15.5 x 38 and especially with 18.4 x 38 and have been advised by those with more experience bigger is better. Thoughts with this? Thanks

If it didn't make a difference there wouldn't be a tire size limit. But I know sometimes a small tire will win. But majority of times big is better.

Probably will depend on where you pull what the tire rule is. Around here it is generally 15.5 38, 14.9 38 or 16.9 34's that are the stock class tires. After 6000# though you are aloud to go to 16.9 38's. If your pulling what is considered Div. 3 classes which are the faster classes, then 18.4 38's are aloud. Div. 3 and above are what is called full cut tires and stock or Div. 2 are uncut unless there is a place that does top cut then it is different again. I run 18.4 38 Firestone or Armstrong's on my big G and 14.9 38's on the stock G. I will use Co-op's if the truck is not real sticky but Goodyear squiggly bars if it is a wet sticky track. In the winter NATPA pulls we have been running 16.9 34 top cuts on the little G.

Bigger is not better, rim width is also critical,
