farmall m what gear to pull in?

I have a 1939 m it has dome piston in the engine. Im going to pull in stock class maybe 4500 but for sure 5000 and 6000. It has a max speed of 3 or 3.5 mph. The tractor has 13.6 - 38 tires on it. The reason for the question is im in the transmission and want to make sure any gear that i might use for pulling is perfect.

A lot of variables with track sled, chain length Weight etc. Pulling a transfer sled is no comparison to pulling, say, 3 16s or a 12 foot tandem disc. Use 1st and hope for the best

1 st gear is 2.6 mph and you will still power out with traction. 2 nd gear is like 3.5 mph and you will do nothing in 2nd gear. if anything slow down first gear, use w6 gears. they are 2.4 mph

Have you pulled it yet? If not I suggest you get out there and start pulling before you even think about changing parts.

What is absolutely important is you have a good rigid hitch with a proper sized pulling ring and figure it out from there. Too low and it wont pull down on the tractor as much, too high and it pulls down too much, either lifting the front too high requiring more weight or causing the tires to bite in too much and if you dont have the motor for it youll power out.

For many tractors its a balancing game with a 3 or 3.5 mph speed limit. Ive seen it many times, the nothing special M or super H just walks on down the track and puts it out front where the power tractors are 10-20ft back.

Again the reason for my post is the transmission is in pieces now, all apart, its getting all new bearings for it do to some failed differential bearings !!!!!! Ive driven a lot of m's , super m in my day but have yet to pull one. While the tranny is apart i wanted to make sure the pulling gears were perfect. Now with that said i would have gone to my first pull and tried third gear. Up here in NY we have mostly transfer sled with one fair that i know of that still uses stone boat. My guess for a stone boat would have been second gear. But from what im reading ill make sure first and second gears look real good. this isnt the first ive heard of useing w6 gears or differential gears. My thought on them is those gears should spin the rear wheels just a little faster cuz the w6 tire size is smaller than a m.

If its a stock m 1st. gear, SM's have faster gears. On a good power track with a 48 or 50 in chain on sled you'll kill it 2nd gear 5,000 and up on weight.

have a look.
