Light class hp?

So Ive been out of pulling for several years but been thinking about getting back in question is how many horse required for light classes? 3250 , 3500,4000 lb 3.5 mph

I pull a MM RTU in those classes and am competitive in our local pulls. Usually in the top three. I run out of traction in 3500 and run out of power in 4500. 4000 is the sweet spot. It's about 38 to 40 HP. Our sled uses a long chain.

I think I have close to 100 hp. I can spin
14.9 x38 top cut tires 5 mph. At the end.
Have never ran out of power in 4500. But
not competitive there in National events.
But I am in 3500 and 4000. NATPA just has
a 18" hitch height. In top cuts. Everyone
else 20" height. I just pull one NATPA
event a year. So am always heavy on front.

Im thinking 100 might be over kill for the light classes not sure could ever get enough tire to hold it.

I pull against Ronnie in the local pulls and he's spot on...We run 18 inch drawbars with a long sled chain..At national level pulls you could probably double those HP
figures...

100 horse might be over kill, but that's
what you'll be pulling against, atleast in
the top cut class's.

I pulled my little 38 HP RTU in a local pull 7-11-20. 3 MPH uncut tires. I beat out two different AC WDs with bored out D17 motors and another RTU with an overhead valve engine swap, for a 1st place win in the 4000 pound class.

Definitely will make a difference if you pull 18" or 20" hitch. Where I'm at 40-50 HP is good with a shorter chain and 20" hitch. Unstyled A JD's and WD45's will be tough to beat in 4000lbs. If you have a 3100lb tractor though you have the advantage in balancing.

Have you been to a pull lately to see if there are any light tractors around yet?
