Wet sleeve flange question

On a wet sleeve, how narrow of a flange can you get by with and be safe/dependable. Thinking of gaining some bore.

That all depends on a few things. I have a JD with a large sleeve in it that only has a .094" wide flange lip, on my engine it works out to 1.577 square inches. 4.875" bore.

Depending on the strength and design of the block, how much iron is between the sleeves?
If you use a ductile iron sleeve you can approach the narrower end of what you want and not have to worry about cracking a sleeve.

What engine are you working on?

Hi Mike - - - it`s a CC case. I wasn`t thinking of enlarging the deck hole for a bigger flange, just thinking of boring out the cylinder part of the hole ans was wondering how narrow a flange I can use. If I remember right, the flange is at least 1/4 inch wide. I need to get my measurements written down instead of depending on my memory!

Gotcha, older version of the DC.

Also look at the diameter of the lower bore. Need to have some material on the sleeve to keep it together. And you also need to run a smaller diameter o-ring to keep more of the sleeve material there. Mine are .152" thick at the bottom with 3 small o-ring grooves.
