IH 560D Air intake question

Has anyone done anything special to your air intake on your 560d puller? I am doing a inframe rebuild, and was looking at the intake. It doesnt seem to make much sense to do much of a port and polish on the head, with the way that intake is made. You cant hardly polish/ clean up any internals on it. Any suggestions?

I was also thinking about fabbing up something that allowed me to put a dry filter aircleaner directly on the flange that runs to the air cleaner. Does that sound beneficial...?

yes, I know I need to do something, but jsut not sure where to start. figured I wouldnt reinvent the wheel if someone had already done any mods. I do think that the engine would breathe better if I could avoid the long breather and through the air cleaner....but it has always worked well for 60 years. I dunno.

Some of the 466- 560's take the intake off, just suck out of the head. Some put 6 tapered (horns) directly to the head. I use a home

homemade box and 2 ford aircleaners.

I think you ll find the best bang for the buck is to improve the flow in the valve and valve seat area with a multi angle seat job.

Then clean up the intake and exhaust port runners slightly and gasket match the head to the intake.

Ditch the oil bath air cleaner and go dry element, you can use a vacuum gauge to see if there is restriction in the pipe air cleaner setup, but remember, air has mass and once it s moving it will tend to stay moving.

Without the use of a flow bench I wouldn t go any further than that.

Thanks, but not sure if make a difference. But when he flowed my head, checked it with nothing. He also ground the ports into the bolt holes. Gained 30% now it flows same as a small block chevy. But I haven't got it to run well yet. Last time it pulled got last, and every piston hit every valve. Now have given it .050 more clearance. With a high lift cam the pistons were catching up to the valves before they were closed.

Sounds like the plan I was going to follow unless anyone came in with something that they felt was worth making. The head is at a good shop getting worked over. Thanks for the reply!
