Dodge cummins 24 valve engine

I was at a friends house working on a truck and a guy stopped there with his dodge diesel. He claimed shied diesel put 42 thousand dollars in the engine and transmission and it was making 800 hp. The truck sounded like a big tractor running. is it possible to make that power out of a 6 cylnder engine. It had a very big pump on it and a huge turbo. Sounded like nothing ive ever heard before.

yeah, you can get well over 1,000 out of those cummins but not really in a street driven truck. 800 is probably on the far end of what is still drivable. some pulling trucks are putting down 1200+.

Sadowsky is right; next time you find yourself at the news stand, flip through a diesel power mag and you'll see some of the numbers they push - it's nuts.

Hi
If a guy wants to do it anythings possible I've seen some pretty hot pickups on you tube, that pulled or where street legal. As for the price personally I would not spend that id buy a house first lol. A bully dog chip programmer would do what I wanted but guess he's got cam work pistons, balancing and all that good stuff that's not cheap.
There are guys out there that will spend that kinda money. Just go look at the pulling classifieds and see what some of these dumb $.@.&'s want for a not very special in my eyes pulling tractor that they have that kinda money in, and cant get it back now there finances have headed south in the down turns some have had.
Regards Robert

The guy is bullshitting you. You can get 800 hp, or more, out of a 5.9 for way less than 42k. I guess he would be paying for all the labor so I'm sure that adds up. Also, I don't think an 800 hp 5.9 would even drive down the road either reliably.

5.9s tend to sound like a tractor with no other mods other than a straight pipe

Dodge had the best engine out there. Now with all the computer,DEF,and pollution control they get the same mileage as the rest.Ford 7.3 was also good and the new Ford I [HAD]got 7MPG or less pulling a trailer.I have seen some people spend their money on chips, turbos ,and big pumps and get big power.42K maybe if the truck was included. We had 21 pickups at our county fair pull and the second place truck had 50 miles on it and was completely stock rated at 400H.P.I know as it was mine.

i can name about 5 off the top of my head in the 6 to 700 range that are driven every day if its built right it shouldnt be a problem and 800 is an average number these days if he has 42k in it he didnt do anything himself and still paid top dollar

I haven't seen any 24 valves in my part of the country but there are quiet a few 12 valves that are pushing 800 to 1000. I have a friend that has a 24 valve with twin turbos and a lot of extras that is pushing the 800. It has a six speed. A while back he reved it up and dropped the clutch, broke the mainshaft in the transmission. The stock drivetrains won't hold a 1000 HP. Maybe that is where the 42,000 came in.

Depends on the 24V...If he had a P Pump on it instead of the junk VP44 and some other goodies (twin turbos, fire-ringed head, bigger injectors, cam, you all know the drill) 800 can happen.

The newer engines jump in horsepower pretty quickly with a tuner, 500rwhp is pretty easily had in the post-VP44 trucks.

Long story short--if you thumb through these diesel truck magazines and read the dyno contest articles, you're gonna have to have 1,000hp at the tires to be in the ball game, but it takes deep pockets to get there.

Completely streetable, actually hauled a gooseneck trailer with another truck on the trailer from Michigan to Kentucky, unhooked, adjusted wastegates and such and laid this down on the dyno, then hooked back on the trailer and drove back to Michigan.

Brian that truck sounded tough and ready to go. I know Shied Diesel does good work. I just never heard one sound like that. Are you going to the princeton NATPA pull. If its not a mandatory weekend at work I bring my tracor to that pull. What sleds will they be using. John Lampkin used to build one heck of a track there.

Ill be there, its not but 12 days away. Mahnke sleds this time on both sides. Be glad to see you and everyone else there. If all goes well we'll be done earlier than in the past.

Scheid does good work their work is not a stranger to those in the diesel truck world.

If he had 42 in it, hes got more money than brains i can get that out of one with $3000 and about two days!

I have a question about the 24 v 5.9 ...... If I were to take the stock turbo off and plumb in a 3LM??? Would this better the performance????

Im not trying to be disrespectfull. Have you ever just built one of those transmissions that are stock. Its at least 900 in parts at the least. If you upgrade it will cost in the range of $4500.00 just in parts. Then add labor and its more. If you can make power that cheap you must have it figured out. If you had a business people would have your shop full with work wanting to be done. Everything costs when you want power and the ones who can produce it get paid well.
