Our local fair pulled a naturally aspirated 10 lbs. class, no speed limit 18" max tires. This was the first year for the class, and I think the crowd really enjoyed it. The tractors in it were Olivers Masseys and I.H. all V8 diesels. My question is could the early 60's model tractors that had the larger 6 cyl. gas engines be built up to pull competitively in a class like this. I know that the antique guys can do amazing things with a gas engine, because I try to pull against them with a diesel. Also since most of the big 6 cyl. tractors are considered gas hogs they are a little cheaper to purchase.

Went to the Edwards Co. fair, they had that class 10000 lb. NA. They was almost all Oliver V8 diesels. There were a couple Massey V8's also a 6 cyl IHC a 966 I think and maybe a 5020 JD.At the Illinois Stock Pullers Web site The rules are posted. It says 10 & 12 thousand lbs. 650 cu. 3500 rpm. The main advantage to the Oliver (In my opinion) is their 3 speed torque. It shift's smoother. So it seems a JD doesn't have a chance, without a torque pulling a drop sled. But a 1355 Moline should be competitive, since the same 3 speed torque is in it to.

Around here all the fair pulls are naturally aspirated only in the lighter classes. 3,750, 5,000, 7,000 and 9,000lbs. Stock RPM's. Gas, E-85 or diesel, your choice. 3,750 and 5,000lbs. are all pretty much antique pullers. 7,000 and 9,000lbs. are mostly more modern 6 cylinders.

Maybe a lighter weight class would be needed, I was thinking of using the tractors more the size of J.D. 3010,4010. A.C. 190, I.H.560. and so on. Does anyone think there would be an interest in a class like this?

560s are a VERY common gas pulling tractor around here, there's even a few running on alcohol (I THINK?) that sound like overgrown chainsaws.

They pull good too, either them or a 4010 usually wins their class.

Then again, I don't think I've ever seen a tractor besides a JD, IH or Ford in a tractor pull.

That all depends on what your rules would be for the class. Here in Wi. there is a class that pulls with P.I just like that. 6500lb N.A these are IH,Moline and a Case 6cyl tractors fueled with alcohol. My opinion is that you would get more entries in the class if they were gas powered with certain limits to keep the cost down for competitors. But that is really up to your group how you want to run it.
