Hey All:

Just wondering how many of you guys have ever used propane injection on a diesel, whether it be tractor or truck. All you would need to make your own kit would be a: solenoid, tank, and nozzle, correct? What kind of nozzles are used and generally how many. Just one in the crossover pipe or 1 for every couple of cylinders. How much might a shot of propane cool the engine as far as egt's are concerned?

Thanks

Why not run methanol/water injection instead?

I just thought propane was a better option from reading in the diesel magazines, but apparently not.

the kits sold years ago were called "Red Roosters" there should be one around, too much and they will knock so don't feed that much! Don't know about jd's but the guys that plowed ewith 30 series Cases said that though they were getting plenty of dsl.(lots of black smoke) the lp cleaned up the smoke and made them pull like a freight train!

We have a propane kit that my dad used on a 4010 deere It ran off the vapor valve, and used a demand regulator. just like a moline LP used only was 150 hp and a m5 used a 250hp. It also had a metering valve/set screw like a LP tractor used. We had a pyrometer on it and we set the LP at 1250deg I think it ran about 1050 on just diesel. Later on I got a MW leaf spring for the diesel pump and the LP just over fueled it. So bottom line it's just more fuel, so just turn up the fuel. Also the old 4010 is still going strong. And I pulled it in the 12000 na class 30 yrs ago.

If a wee stream of liquid LP was injected via a jetted down nitrous system. The vaporizing LP would absorb some heat and drop the inlet temps a few degrees. The effects would be minimal as the stream of LP would be very small. As previously stated. Too much LP will ignite before the diesel is even injected. Over heated and broken parts are the result.

O it had a elec solnoid in the high pressure line that was mounted on the throttle. went into the pipe going to the intake. more diesel is better.

I've seen it bust pistons on a diesel.

used LP on a MF1130 back in the 60's when I was farming no vaporizer needed as LP was pulled off vapor side of a front mounted tank...tractor would run about 175hp. on the dyno...lasted about 3yrs. & then started using oil ...replaced the engine & left the LP off...worked good on a 21ft. disk at the time....

What did you use for a nozzle/solenoid to regulate the amount it got?

I f Im not mistaken you also have to have a vaporizer or something to make sure the propane is completly vapor and not liquid. Liquid propane and diesel compression are not a good mix. Big boom! Someone else should post to confirm or deny this. Either way, Good luck!

Unlike natural gas, propane has a lower octane rating. Too much propane and the diesel will begin to suffer knock/auto detonation prior to diesel injection. EGT's have to be observed with a pyro. Nitrous injection equipment can be used.
