how thick should a flat plate be for a tractor that pulls up to 8,000 pounds? reason im even asking is because im worried about weight dont want inch stuff if 1/2 inch stuff will be sufficiant

I use 1/2 in plate on three of my tractors and one is for open cla only. Hoss

most clubs mandate 3/4 in or larger for a hitch plate. your only talking a few pound between 3/4 to 1 in, just take a leak before you weigh in.
