Sorry I'm asking so many questions but which of these two tires (18.4-34 or 16.9-38) would be the best for pulling that is?

I would stay with a 16" rim, especially if you pull where there are rim limits, sometimes rules say tire must be mounted on the rim size on the tire or no more than one inch wider, to make a set of 17's or so would be alot of work for very little result, IMO

I'm not running anything right now. I'm working towards open gear.

On the "ideal" prepared track, 18.4 may have an advantage if cut correctly for say 5500# and up. I pull agressively cut 16.9 X 38 in 5500# and can compete with the best considering my lack of horsepower. Some M's are doing well in 4500# with 18.4, but I've also seen 16.9/15.5/14.9 beat them in a traction fight. I would say for 4500# you get better downpressure on a narrower tire and this is good if you are fighting for tracion on local scrub tracks. But if it is a true "power track" 18.4 is the way to go if you have the gear and power.

I had one set of each mounted on pressed steel at one time same brand same ply and everything the stood identical height but the 18-4's were wider dont know why but the 16-9 rubber always worked better no matter the track conditions were runnin anywhere from 5500 to 8500 lbs hope it helps you some

Thanks guys! I think I will go with the 16.9's. My next question is what width rim should I use?

Our 16.9 Firestone Deep Treads are on 17" rims. It makes that thick stiff sidewall stand right straight. Seems to work well, but Deep Treads are quite square with long bars compared to some of the new jelly donut balloon round squishy tires. I have yet to try my 16.9 X 30 on 17".
