Brush painting sheet metal?

The red on my IH has faded over time and I was thinking of just trying to spruce it up without spending a lot of time - only the hood panels. Rather than making a mess with spray paint I was thinking about trying it carefully with a good brush. If I am careful, will it look Ok, or would it be a mistake? This is my work tractor and not a show tractor. I have the white panels off and primed and will spray those.

Thanks,
Tim

The thicker the paint the better it will look. I have painted around a dozen over the years with a brush. If you want to sell one after the repaint just let it sit in the sun for a few weeks . It will look good with out the what is the paint hiding look

Might also try a small paint roller too. I used one on our equipment trailer with good results.

You can do a good job with a brush. Use as soft a brush as you can find and apply the paint with as few strokes as possible. The more you brush paint the more the brush marks show. If you miss a spot leave it. Better to go back and put another coat on after it dries than to make a bunch of brush marks on it. Assuming you plan to use an alkyd enamel you can also add Flood Penetrol to the paint to slow the drying time down. This especially helps when working it in hot weather.

Thank you all for the replies. I am gonna try it - ordered 2 quarts of IH red from Walmart yesterday. Need to clean things up while I am waiting for the paint to arrive.

How do you order anything from Walmart? Have never found a way to do that. But no plans to order anything I cannot just go to store and get from any place.

Mike you are right, I always use a small roller too, it just slipped past me! If you use a roller wash it in plain water and let it dry before you use it. I have found some with the fuzzies and they made a mess.

They don't carry everything in the store. That's where walmart.com comes in. Also it's a convenience, my wife orders household items from them. If you make the minimum order they will deliver it to your door for the same price it would cost at the store.

Good brush and correct paint.

Just FYI, just Walmart.com. Lots more stuff available than in stores.

Those all look great! I will be happy if mine come out half a good. But its my work tractor that spends some tough hours in the woods in the fall/winter, so I actually don't want it to look too pretty...

Once I got the hood cleaned up, I see that I have some scratches and dings with surface rust. I am planning to lightly sand those and apply some primer made to go on rusty metal - does anyone have experience doing that?

Thanks!

Tim

Rattle can job I did on my tractor the hood had a big dent where it got caved in when the loader broke pounded it out with a sledge hammer tried a little bondo wasnt to proficient at that but looks better than what it did
