Hey guys, Ive got a small air compressor and dont have a water separator on it, Im wanting to paint some tractor sheet metal. Have any of you guys tried a power sprayer from Lowes to paint tractors using acrylic enamel ?

What is a power sprayer? Airless? How does it work? Make and model? For primers, enamels and two-stage topcoats application of automotive paints you need a high quality, regulated spray gun.

The ones I have looked at in the past, were for latex paints only.Your results may vary.

The power sprayer is intended to spray thick paint such as latex. It would do pretty bad spraying acrylic enamel.

If you keep your compressor drained you shouldn't need a water separator. Usually you get water in air at high pressure but at 40 psi which you would be spraying with it's seldom you get water in it. I paint all the time without a water separator. I have had them before but they don't seem to help much. If there is water present it will get past the water separator.

Why not pick up a separator and put it on? They don't cost much and are very easy to install. When sand blasting I use two, one just before where the hose attaches and a second just before the kettle.

Dad had an electric Wagner sprayer. We used it a couple times to spray enamel on grain truck bodies and racks with mixed results. Always had trouble to keep it from blowing a spatter type pattern. I'm definitely not a painter, but on all of the tractors and equipment that I have painted, I use a Excell siphon style gun. I will drain the compressor just before painting and screw an inline disposable air filter into the gun air inlet port to catch any moisture or compressor oil. Never had an issue doing it like this.

I'll second this.

You might find you could do better work and use less paint with a HVLP gun. The purple HF guns that they sell for $9.97 to $14.97 really aren't that bad. I don't think I'd tackle a complete clear coat job on a car or pickup with one, but for all around work they're OK.
