Hi folks,

I am in the early planing stages of a Farmall A restoration which will certainly need to be painted. I have limited experience when it comes to spray painting but do know that using automotive urethanes requiring hardners also requires a 100% fresh air respirator. Wondering if any of you have experience with the HobbyAir 1/W/40 system or other brands that you would recommend. I don t think I need the most top of the line set up since it will get limited use but I am in no way taking any chances with my health.

Read some of the HobbyAir reviews which are mostly positive except a couple complaints about very warm supply air and the mask does not protect your glasses whereas a full hood would. Thanks for any advise or comments you have.

I don't know of any reason a C-Pap machine couldn't be jury rigged to function as a air supplied respirator. Unless you made a career out
of spraying urethane it wouldn't be necessary to wear a full hood. The clean air would be enough to paint one tractor.

if you are shooting urethanes, wear a paint suit. a disposable one would work, use the hood. wear goggles to cover your eyes. the solvents
are readily absorbed thru skin and the tissues in and around your eyes.

Years ago I had to learn a hard lesson,
aint no shiney tractor worth my health.
The hobby air supply system is fine but
use a full face respirator AND a
disposable coverall that covers up
everything else. This or don't use
hardened paint.

I used a Breathecool system and didnt experience the
air being warm. I used full hood and tyvek Coveralls. I
bought 75 feet of extra hose and put the air pump that
far away and up wind. If using hardner you cant be to
careful.

I used the Hobbyair 1 with the full hood, so warm air was not an issue for me. I could not smell any fumes during the spray session. I used a respirator and goggles while mixing the hardener but the biggest risk is having the mixture atomized by the gun. The biggest safety issue with my setup is that the hose can get caught on things like the legs of a hoist. So, you need to have your paint area free of trip hazards. If you fasten the hose to your waist (with the belt included in the kit) it helps you navigate without the hose pulling on your hood. The hood has a collar that inflates (under the chin and around your neck) to keep the hood in place while sealing off your head from the fumes/spray. You can adjust the flow from the air pump to control the amount of air supplied inside the hood. It takes a little getting used to, but it seemed like a very good system to me. So, I definitely recommend the hood and I also highly advise getting a full paint suit. I used the Luma III.

I use a Breathecool system which is very similar to Hobby Air. I use the full face mask as I wear glasses. One point you need to consider. No problem with warm air or delivery. When I first used mine a strap broke on the mask. They immediately sent me a complete mask. Very good customer support. A little spendy now, but well worth the money in comparison to later health issues.
