Paint for hay rakes

Looking to paint a couple NH 56 rakes. What paint do you guys recommend? The stuff at the farm store work? Also needing a paint gun to spray it. Thanks for any help
 


The key is going to be killing the rust and good epoxy primer. The top paint on a rake doesn't matter that much if fading doesn't bother you. After cleaning up the rust with your flap wheel and wire brush go at it liberally brushing on phosphoric acid. After going around it 2-3 times with the acid brush to help it work in. Pressure wash it before it dries. Then apply the epoxy primer.
 
The red part of the rake will be your biggest issue. The color red is very prone to fade. If it's left outside when not in use you might consider at least painting that part with an automotive paint. The yellow could be painted with Rustoleum Farm and Implement paint with a hardener. You can get both of these at Tractor Supply. It would take some tinkering to match the color. I believe they only sell John Deere Yellow but could be lightened by adding white. If you did both with an automotive paint you could just take a color sample to an automotive paint supplier and they can computer match it. For automotive paint I prefer Omni MAE acrylic enamel.

Yup, ten-12 years ago I put a new deck on one of my wagons and painted the sides at the same time. I even prepped it and primed it with epoxy. IIRC it was New Holland red implement paint. it is now reddish brown, and in some areas it has weathered right away.

Here is my friend's H Farmall that the local FFA chapter restored for him 15 years ago. The paint has held up pretty well under the decals.

Rust-oleum great name but terrible paint.
 
Is the #56 two tone red and yellow or solid red?

I agree with buying paint from a NH dealer. The red Rustoleum paints that I have used faded to orange in just a few years.
 
Thanks guys. If we are going to the trouble to rebuild the rakes I would like the paint to last. Of course they will be used so we need it durable too
 
use the new holland paint with their hardener sprayed out of a gun, that that will last the longest . the new holland brand rattle cans will out last all of the other brands also
