alkyd enamel thinner

It was a hot day and I thinned alkyd enamel with acetone for spraying. It dried so fast the finish was rough kinda like sandpaper. I'm gone respray and it is still hot. Would mineral spirits be a better choice? What else might be better if not mineral spirits?

Yes, mineral spirits would be better if you are having difficulty with it drying too fast. If you want to slow it down more add some Flood Penetrol to it too. It's like retarder thinner for oil based finishes. It slows down the drying time. Still don't thin it too
much. An oil based finish should slightly splatter as you spray it. Thinned correctly it should flow together before it sets up. If you thin it too much it will flow out nice but it kills the sheen.

If the surface is rough you may have to put a 2-3 coats on sanding between coats before it's smooth. It may make it easier to put an oil based primer over the rough paint and then try to sand it smooth.
