Most Challenging When Painting

What's the most challenging part of painting or bodywork have you ever done? How did you do it? Any tips?

Applying candy apple. Applying the basecoat is easy. Applying the color is the challenge. Each color coat is translucent and every coat of color makes the job slightly darker. Sounds easy but
the air pressure, nozzle fan and overlap must be perfect & consistent or you get streaks of lighter or darker color in the job.

I had that same thing with Imron blue when I work for a over the road truck shop. This paint was a high dollar paint so I did every thung it said on the can on mixture. As I was painting the door I could see black stripes in it witch I figured that I'm no over lapping right. I let that coat tack up an give it another one moving to over lap them black stripes. Nope more new ones now. O was mad because I was doing as I always have with good jobs with the other paint we used. So I let that paint flash out good an there were them stripes. So now I was really mad an figured well I'm going to haverify to redo the door and I still had some of the paint in the cup so I just sprayed it on as heavy as I can to make it sage and leave curtains only to fix tomorrow. Came to work an the boss seem me an told me nice work on the truck and I said ya I'll get it done. Went in the paint shop an them stipe were gone and it look nice. Don't really know why it had them but when I painted other trucks they were there also it was like the paint was showing where the over lap was.

For me getting up the nerve to start the project is the hardest.

Thanks all for your responses. Painting is really hard. When starting a project, "Yeah, I can do this. It's easy!" Like I'm so optimistic I'm gonna do great but while starting and a little bit in the middle of it, I regret starting it in the first place. I'm like a 3rd grader doing drawing work. So I do end up going to the pros and let them finish the job.

I think that it is like so many other things that just take practice. The difference with painting however is the penalty that you pay when you mess up is huge. I have found that you can't do a good job of shooting paint without a lot of light.

Getting the body filler just right has always been the hardest for me. I have to put some paint color on before I can see what's not right, I'd never be able
to read Braille. Painting not such a challenge ( was taught by one of the best body/paint men I've ever seen ) but the size like a Steiger tractor or an old
school bus has made me wonder what I had gotten into.

tgrasher, pick up a can of semm guide coat, dust it on , block sand it and check your bodywork. we use it at the body shop.

prep work! Clean, clean, clean and when you
think you're done clean some more.

I have found that any dirt grease oil etc. residue has all disappeared during my first week of wire wheeling before I even get to sanding and body work.

I've always said the actual act of putting the paint on a vehicle was a one hour climax to two or more weeks of hard work.

Yeah, and there's that! But it's not linked to OCD or something, right? The cleaning that is. I know someone who has OCD and it's really annoying at some point. I mean, seriously. There's nothing to clean. LOl But she's in therapy for this, so I guess it could be addressed. Not of a big deal, I guess. Anyone with the same experience?
