heat and cold water dent removal

I have a sheet metal hood on a DC Case, and was moving in the direction of applying heat to the top and cool it with water. I am seeking a proper technique . Heat to the top,and cool on the top, or cool on the bottom? My thought is if you cool on the top , it will draw up. There are no creases,. I can provide further insight if needed. CM

It's just a matter of heating the metal. If you are careful not to blister the paint you can use a heat gun. Then it's not just a matter of pouring water on it, it works better if you use ice water. You apply the water gently so it doesn't cool too fast. The dent pops out because the face of the metal cools faster than the back side. This only works on a large gently dent like someone hit the metal with a basketball. It won't work with a dent that is a crease. It's one of those paintless dent repairs.

I thought as much and that is exactly what I have a basketball size dent, Just above The mag . I appreciate your insight Ill try to get a picture of before and after. CM

If it doesn't work on the first try you can do it multiple times. That tin is going to be a lot heavier gauge than the car bodies they do paintless dent repair on. Since the paint is in bad shape you might use a heat gun.
