Restoring steering wheel

Have a 8n steering wheel that needs rubber redone. Has anyone ever tried using the rubber dip or anything else for that matter. Replacing the wheel is not one of my options. Tractor has been here since 49. All advice appreciated. Thanks

Evergreen Restorations restores original gauge and has also started re furbishing steering wheels. I assume that the reason for not replacing it has to do with not taking it off the tractor. If most the the black stuff is still on the frame, I have used bondo(body putty)to fill in the gaps, and then paint it black. I like how my 9n steering wheel turned out.

This has come up here numerous times over the years. The usual procedure is to grind off all rubber that is not still firmly bonded to the steel wheel and then clean the steel wheel itself. Part of cleaning the steel is to kill any possible remaining rust with a phosphoric acid rust converter. Once the wheel is clean it is a matter of building it up layer upon layer with body filler. Rage by Evercoat is a popular filler.

I know jerry from Evergreen Restoration for a lot of years and have gauges from him and he does a very good job. Also on the steerlng wheels also. Very nice guy to deal with will make it right with you and it looks like there doing tractor gauges for all tractors not John deere as he was as first. I'm sure if you wanted that steerlng wheel back he would make sure you would get it.

Good advice on preparing the wheel. When I redid a wheel 25 yrs ago I used J B Weld and it has held up well. Cover coat it with black paint and it will
look like a new wheel.

Send me a email on contact info. Wheel is off of tractor, that's not a issue. Just wanted to keep the same wheel that my father, grandfather and great grandfather used.

Thanks for response

Farmall wheels are hard plastic . I filled the cracks with J-B weld and then with wet hands worked it into the wheel .Then painted black.

have 2 steering wheels done for my IHC pickups by "steering wheel bob"
Done an excellent . but you have to send him the wheel.

In 2010 I bought a 48 TE20 Ferguson pulled from a barn fire. Of course all of the soft parts were ruined. But out of respect to the tractor surviving with no major
damage,I wanted to keep as many original parts together that I could. I knew that the original steering wheel frame was still solid but had no rubber left. I had my
steering wheel redone with aspen wood and refinished it after I rebuilt the tractor. I have always liked the look of a wood steering wheel and the larger diameter of the
wood just feels "right".

I had a badly-cracked Farmall wheel, went to O'Reilly's and bought a can of spray-on black truck bed coating.
Sprayed 8 - 10 coats, lightly sanding in between, turned out perfect. Black, grippy, slightly textured, hard,
permanent, easy to hold onto, has lasted about 10 years now. Very happy.
