Cleaning and painting bolts, nuts, and washers

So far this is the best way I've found to do the hardware when restoring a tractor. The hardware is cleaned first with solvent and then wire brushed with a bench grinder. Anybody else have a way they prefer?

I normally drill a bunch of holes in a 2x4 for that. Kind of a waste of time to paint bolts unless you get a set of those sockets with a plastic inserts. You otherwise chew the paint all up using the bolts and then have to touch it up with a brush.

You are correct that the paint does get chewed on but it's impossible to shoot paint on the backside of bolt heads and nuts when they are up against a wall, like an oil pan. I use an artist type brush and, if able, a rattle can to touch up. Yes it takes quite a while to touch up, so I make it a more than one session project. Have a 730 Case in about a thousand pieces right now that will keep me busy for while.

It will do less damage if you use full face sockets. I couldn't find the sockets with the plastic inserts when I did my tractor so I settled on full face sockets.
