Making old paint new.

Hello

I have been working on my super MTAs. One of them has very good original paint. I was wondering if there is anything I can do to make that paint look better because I am taking that one to a parade here coming up. Also is it ok to wax it?

2X on rubbing compound. Start with the lower abrasive as it does remove the oxidized layer of paint. It is easy to remove too much paint.

Are you familiar with the various grades of buffing compound ? Start with a heavy cutting one and work towards fine . The RPM of the buffer matters too .Homeowner quality car wax buffers
are too slow to be effective . Don't forget they make sandpaper in 2000 grit which may be used before buffing to flatten paint.

Old enamel does not take to buffing very well unless it has been applied with hardener in the paint mix. The buffer adds heat and will curl straight enamel if you don't do it correctly. Hand rubbing is the better choice. Mcguires makes several grits of polishing compound that work very well. Any hand job will Take many hours, but better than ruining the enamel paint.

Acrylic enamel with hardener will take buffing very well with out the threat of peeling the paint. Never use the older high speed buffers. You will burn the paint easily. Use the newer buffers with variable speed range, and then not over setting #3. Start out at #1 speed and increase slowly to #3. Buffing at sheet metal corners has a high incidence of removing all the paint. Be careful and it will dome out right.

Before and after used a power ball and turtle 🐢 wax all metal
