What would be good to use on a rusty
tractor to sort of "preserve" the rust? I
think what little paint is left in places
is original and not looking to repaint it
at this time, just wanting to keep it from
rusting any more. It is kept in a shed out
of the weather. I was thinking of wiping it
down with diesel, but I know that attracts
lots of dirt and dust. Any suggestions?

2X Ospho, or any of the phosphoric acid rust converters. Being watery thin it creeps in under paint where you don't even know that there is rust and stop the rust from extending. I twill leave the surface black which I like a lot better than the rust.

(quoted from post at 19:51:37 07/12/20) I will have to check on that stuff. I've
never heard of it before. Do you know what
stores carry it?

J, thirty years ago I got it at my local hardware. More recently I got it from my local auto parts store. I used Rust Mort by SEM which is a line of autobody supplies. I bought a quart and it lasted me for five years. Pretty much any store that carries any autobody supplies has it. I recommend clear as opposed to one that is black, because the color masks weather or not you need more application.

What do the those rat rod guys use ? Or those guys that auction old cars with rust and originals paints ,check out . I think it’s linseed oil on a shop rag .
Don’t store the linseed rag in the garage ,spontaneously combustion ,check out ,fire proof container ,I had to add that safety fists
I thought you might want to think about that detailing method , may a lot more to it than I know. Never done it .

allyMart has it and of course, Am@Zn too. Just do a search for it.

(quoted from post at 15:21:50 07/14/20) Fluid Film sold at most Farm Stores.

Wow, he is concerned about diesel attracting dust. Fluid film will make it a dust magnet. That stuff is super sticky!

It does stay in a shed out of the weather, but here in Southern Illinois certain times of the year you can walk into a shed or uninsulated barn and everything will be dripping wet from sweating. We have the worst climate for rust.

J Hamilton, it happens here in NH too.

If you like the rust then just do nothing. Kept under a roof the metal should deteriorate very slow. Anything you would treat it with would greatly change the appearance. If you feel like you need to put something on it then spray it with WD-40 especially when the weather is especially damp. Even though it's under a roof humidity will condensate on the metal.

Do not use WD40 or anything else with silicone in it if you ever want to paint it.
