Paint removal

I use both fine wire (yellow) and coarse wire (gray) 4-1/2 angle grinder wire wheels to remove paint and rust. They are much cleaner than sandblasting ( which I absolutely hate and only use when absolutely necessary). I also keep several fine and coarse wire wheels for the Dremel tool to use in tight spaces the bigger wheels wont reach. They remove paint clean without the nasties in paint strippers or the grit in your underwear from sandblasting. I do use isopropyl alcohol as an oil and grease remover after the brush jobs. I have done this on 3 restorations now and no problems with pain adhesion on any restore.

This has come up numerous times over the years and the easy consensus has been that a cup type twisted wire wheel is the weapon of choice for cleaning both rust and old paint from our old stuff. As rew1953 said besides this real heavy duty one there are many others that are very useful in the arsenal. The largest bore cannon, however, is the flap wheel.

Depends on what you are removing paint from. I use an orbital sander on sheet metal. A wire wheen on most everything else that is easily accessible and sandblast difficult places.

the knotted wire wheels work good on the 4.5 inch grinder. i also like the encapsulated wire wheels. they are more aggressive snap on has em, use on
a high speed air grinder. here is a link.

I use cup brushes more often than anything else. But as a warning you really need to use a full face
shield with them. You can pull a wire out of you arm, but your eye is harder.

Heartly agree. They do throw a wire occasionally, a lot more when worn at which time I discard. I use the old style welding helmet with 2 clear lenses which covers the face and neck quite well, plus safety glasses with side shields under the welding hood. I also wear heavy clothing, pants and long sleeve shirts to minimize wire throws into the arms and legs.
