Paint and clear

Just need a little info on paint and clear. Is the hardener for the paint or do you mix it in the clear. I haven't use any clear on the tractors and I know some guys do. I don't plan on using clear on the tractors I just get a shine with the paint im using. Thanks guys I was just wondering.

Hard to say without knowing what product you are working with. There are hardeners for both paints and clears both. Generally when you use a paint and a clear it's a system called base coat/clear coat. For that you don't have a choice but to use a clear coat, the paint goes on very thin and dead flat. It takes the clear coat to produce the shine. It sounds like what you are proposing using is a single stage paint which there isn't the need to clear coat. It has the pigment and clear all mixed together and produces a shine on it's own.

Before you start spraying a paint with a hardener let us know what you are using. Some are alright with good ventilation and a regular paint respirator. Other paints are dangerous to use where you need a respirator which pumps clean air to the respirator. It's known as an air supplied respirator. Very expensive for someone that paints once in a while.

Thanks for the info on this what would you thing I should use to paint a 39 h john deere. I know my boy painted an A like 7 years ago with john deere classic green an it look good the day he painted it but the next day it was dull. He got mad at it an then removed all the paint then painted it again but no hardener in the paint and it shine every nice and to this day it still looks nice except by the fuel tank it is peeling off and im thinking it is because I spilled fuel on the hood. I cleaned it up right away but it started to do the peeling in about a week. The paint and hardener was all given to him at the john deere shop. Thanks.

JD man, what I buy for paint depends on what I am painting and how much work I am putting into it. If I am just going to clean it up good and paint it I would get implement paint at the dealer. If I am going to spend fifty hours on prep I will get automotive paint. My most recent project I did with Nason base-clear from Dupont. A few years ago I did one with Nason 2K urethane with hardener. Most people use a hardener to get better shine and durability from their paint.

This is the one that I did with the Urethane.

WOW is that nice thanks for the reply I can only hope mine turns out good. That tractor there is like what my uncle had and he would use it for every thing and was his best tractors on the farm. Thanks for the picture it brings back good memories.

With the ethanol they put in gas today painting a gas tank you might use something like Nason for that. It's a single stage paint which doesn't have to have the clear coat and is resistant to fuel spills. Now the Nason is the paint I warned about affecting your health. I sprayed two gallons of it one time out doors wearing a chemical respirator and held my breath when I was down wind from the paint. When I was done I coughed for six months. I won't spray that much anymore without doing it in a spray booth or have an air supplied respirator. I painted this tractor with Nason and it's holding up well.

The rest of it you might use an acrylic enamel. It's an automotive paint which is more user friendly.

If you don't want to go to the expense of an automotive paint, Sherwin Williams makes a hard enamel formulated for things like implements and dumpsters. It's called Sher-kem enamel. It's also a urethane.

Wow what a nice looking tractor. You did a very good job on the CASE and it shows it. If I was you I would sure be proud of that tractor.
