To stop this rust in seam on bottom of tailgate. 2014 Ford F-150

You first need to take it down to bare metal. Because of the shape it would be best to sandblast. Then because rust has deep roots treat the metal with phosphoric acid and rinse clean. Once dry primer with an epoxy primer and paint. It should never rust again.

replace the tailgate. you can get an aftermarket one pretty cheap. the rust is inside the crimp and no way to stop it.

I have pretty much stopped the rust in places like that on my '06 350. On the tailgate and at the bottoms of the doors I dragged a screwdriver across where the rust is to remove heavier rust and loose paint. Then I sprayed WD-40 on it. After a day for it to penetrate I sprayed aerosol chain lube on it. I renew it every year. It has been about nine years and I can't see where the rust has advanced. I am not saying that this will stop the rust but it is looking like it will keep it from showing while I own the truck, and should help the resale.

Thanks for all the replies. I don't know which way I will go yet. It has the backup camera so I am leaning to fix what I have. I have two other projects going right non. but I will get to it before fall.

TJ what I did took me all of 20 min the first time and 15 after that.

Used Motor oil....never saw one rust worse once used motor oil was applied regularly...

Interior Panel (Waxy Based) spray is as good as you can use, if you can get it in to SEAL that seam..

Same way you would have put the phosphoric acid on. Just keep it damp for a while so the crystals can form. Once painted will keep the rust away a lot longer than iron phosphate.

I thought I might give it a try. But,I have been unable to find a source. Lots of primers available that contain zinc phosphate, but not the material itself to use as a dip/spray etc. Any ideas?
